The Guy In The Glass (Is Fear Stopping You?)

fearYou have your main goal in sight. It’s your dream job or the creative business you’re going to start. You’ve thought about your big goal a lot and you’ve created a detailed action plan to get  there.

BUT, you’ve barely taken ANY action. You’ve told friends and family that you’re moving ahead with your plans and that it’s going well.

But that’s just NOT the truth

You’ve disguised your lack of any real action from yourself as well by doing busy tasks.

Doing things that are easy to accomplish but don’t yield you any real results. Like doing a spring clean of your house which, once it’s done, you’ll tell yourself you’ll definitely be able to get stuck into your job search without distraction. Or, you spend reams of time reading about  companies you’d love to work for and you tell yourself you’re getting so much done.

The fear factor

If you’re really honest with yourself you’re scared. You fear “getting it wrong”, looking stupid or being rejected.

So you don’t act on your dreams, inertia remains and you keep being busy.

The days pass and you’re no further than before.

You put off what matters most; what could really impact  your happiness in  a big way.

What successful people do

Successful people face fear too. The only difference  between you and them is that successful people move forward and take action regardless.

If you’re worried what people think of you perhaps you should consider if they’ll be there when you  confront your own inaction. Or,  when you’re tossing and turning in the early hours of the morning frustrated that you did nothing in the last week to move forward.

The Guy in the Glass

By death row inmate Dale Wimbrow 1934

When you get what you want in your struggle for pelf, *

And the world makes you King for a day,

Then go to the mirror and look at yourself,

And see what that guy has to say.

For it isn’t your Father, or Mother, or Wife,

Who judgement upon you must pass.

The feller whose verdict counts most in your life

Is the guy staring back from the glass.

He’s the feller to please, never mind all the rest,

For he’s with you clear up to the end,

And you’ve passed your most dangerous, difficult test

If the guy in the glass is your friend.

You can fool the whole world down the pathway of years,

And get pats on the back as you pass,

But your final reward will be heartaches and tears

If you’ve cheated the guy in the glass.

* According to the Oxford English Dictionary pelf refers to money especially when gained in a dishonest or dishonourable way.
